AI Book Covers
AI ART | TYPOGRAPHY | AESTHETIC
I’ve been incredibly interested in the intersection of AI and creativity since the early days of Dalle, where everything you generated was a horrid abomination of machine’s early learnings. As the technologies advanced I followed along learning ChatGPT and MidJourney, and figuring out ways to use them in my workflows as they progressed.
The following works are a collaboration of human and machine creativity where I worked alongside MidJourney to create imagery from my imagination and turn them into a fully executed creative project.
My process starts with an idea. That idea may be a character, a scene, a place I see in my imagination, but lack the artistic skillset to produce myself to the level I wish. From there I write a series of prompts to enable MidJourney to create a collection of images to choose from based on my description of my idea. It takes some trial and error, but it’s always fascinating to see how the program will interpret my direction and present it. During this phase I learn a lot about how to communicate with the technology and refine my future efforts.
Once MidJourney has generated art I feel closely enough resembles my vision I take the photo into lightroom and apply presets and grain to match the retro dark fantasy aesthetic.
Next I bring the edited file into Illustrator and crop it, write a title, design the title typography, and add the detail elements like author name and publisher. The final stage is bringing it into Photoshop where I apply some scratches, crease marks, and stickers to give the appearance of a heavily used retro book.
